School Safety

When entering the education system, whether it be a public or private institution, it is important to be knowledgable of school safety and what that entails. School should be a safe place for your child to go to as they develop their education, make friends, find new hobbies, and grow as an individual from Kindergarten to 12th grade. In this blog post, I am going to discuss specifically targeted violence within the education system and how to take proper precautions in order to feel confident about you and your child's safety at school. Targeted violence is "violence that is premeditated and directed at a specific individuals, groups, or locations." This means that this type of violence tends to not be random or spontaneous and is planned, either by one specific person or a group of people can cause violence on others. This can be due to personal reasons or the want to create chaos. One way to prevent targeted violence is to bring this to the school's staff team and confront the issue up front and not to allow it to happen again. Bringing awareness of the problem to the school's attendees can help reduce and stop the violence and punish those who are a threat to others. Staff would identify the issue at hand, assess the individuals involved, and intervene with those who are dangerous to others. 

I have not personally dealt with targeted violence but I am aware of other individuals and how their situations may be different. I think it is important to bring awareness to targeted violence as it is a huge factor in school safety and setting up a student for success. When the students are able to attend school and receive an education without being targeted, it brings a better quality of life, education, and growth in skills and development.
